Artist Statement

The concept for my project is centred around Art block and how it has affected my journey as an artist, specifically with the pandemic were facing. I acknowledge that this struggle is commonly shared between artists and each one of us chooses different ways to cope. The crisis brought up a lot of insecurities for some of us. For me, these all boiled down to a singular question.

Is it time for me to let go of Art?

This question justifiably brings a lot of anxiety as it suggests letting go of a major part of my identity. However, the answer to this dilemma could also be the salvation I have been seeking for the past years, so desperately.

Representing such an emotionally charged topic could only be portrayed in a dramatic manner in order to convey my message properly. I felt like the most proper way to do so was through making a self-portrait painted on a canvas.

The painting would portray the subject matter dramatically embracing a pelican, that is slowly fading into butterflies while being surrounded by candles.

Pelicans have been known through history to represent sacrifice, in this painting particularly, it should mirror my artistic side. The butterflies are an indication of rebirth, suggesting that this passion will transform to become something new. The candle's purpose is to set a sombre and mourning mood to the painting, to compliment the pained expression on my face. This combination of symbols that are complete opposites (Hope and Despair), should make the viewer question if the message of this painting is a serene one or a haunting one.

This leaves the viewer to make their own decision regarding my question. My passion could be rebirthed into something entirely different. However, it could have evolved to be better and not changed. I am leaving this Artwork with no finality, free for interpretation, as I have yet to decide for myself. Another artist struggling with the same dilemma could look at this painting and be inspired to make a choice of their own.
